For many visitors, Mostar is the highlight of Bosnia — and its iconic Stari Most bridge makes it an unmissable day trip from Sarajevo. With an early start you can see the bridge, the old bazaar, the Blagaj dervish house, and more, and be back in the capital by evening. Here's how to do it well.
How far is Mostar from Sarajevo?
Mostar is about 130 km south of Sarajevo — roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way by road. The drive itself is gorgeous, following the emerald Neretva river through the mountains, so the journey is part of the experience.
How to get there
There are trains and buses, but for a day trip a private transfer or guided tour is far easier: you leave when you want, stop at the sights along the way, and don't lose hours to timetables. It also means prayer stops and halal lunch are built in rather than left to chance.
What to see in Mostar
- Stari Most — the 16th-century Ottoman bridge arching over the Neretva, rebuilt after the war and now a UNESCO site. Watch the famous divers in summer.
- Kujundžiluk — the old bazaar, all cobblestones, copperware, and cafés, right by the bridge.
- Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque — climb the minaret for the classic postcard view of the bridge.
Beyond the bridge
Most day trips pair Mostar with one or two nearby gems:
- Blagaj Tekija — a serene dervish house built into the cliff beside the turquoise Buna spring, about 15 minutes away.
- Počitelj — a stepped Ottoman village of stone houses and a hilltop fort.
- Kravice Waterfalls — if you have the time and the season is right, a refreshing finish to the day.
A sensible day timeline
- Morning: leave Sarajevo early, arrive in Mostar for the bridge and bazaar before the day-tripper rush.
- Midday: Dhuhr prayer and a halal lunch in the old town.
- Afternoon: Blagaj and Počitelj (and Kravice if time allows), back to Sarajevo for the evening.
Tips for Muslim visitors
- Halal food is easy to find in Mostar's old town — see our Bosnian food guide for what to order.
- Herzegovina gets hot in summer; go early, bring water, and wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles.
- Prayer facilities are plentiful, and your guide will always help you find a mosque or quiet space.
